WHY OMEGA PHI BETA?

Greek Life is an ever growing, expanding system. With dozens of sororities in existence you, or your love one, have many Greek-letter and women’s organizations to choose from. So what makes Omega Phi Beta different?

Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated was founded on March 15th, 1989 by seventeen visionary women with the intent of fighting against the injustices that women, particularly women of color, have been subjected to in our society. Our founders were academic scholars, student leaders and overall extraordinary women that laid the foundation for a sorority that not only believed in, but actively promoted women's rights. Membership in Omega Phi Beta means a life-long commitment to your community, your sisters, and yourself.

DOES YOUR ORGANIZATION HAZE?

Omega Phi Beta believes in providing constructive, encouraging, and educational programs and activities during the New Member Education Program for both prospective and current members. OPBSI is opposed to any form of hazing including any activities which do not contribute to the positive development and welfare of its membership and prospective members. Omega Phi Beta believes that true sisterhood is nurtured in an atmosphere of social and moral responsibility.

DO YOU NEED A CERTAIN GRADE POINT AVERAGE TO PURSUE MEMBERSHIP?

Yes. Theta Chapter requires a minimum of a G.P.A 2.7/4.0 scale. If you are seeking expansion, you need a minimum of a 2.7/4.0 scale.  Although the minimal requirement is a 2.7, we encourage your G.P.A. to be above that because we are college students and our first commitment and priority are academics and achieving our scholastic goals.

DO YOU HAVE A BROTHER FRATERNITY?

No. One of the many reasons our organization was founded was to fight against the injustices suffered by our gender. As a sorority we function independently and this is something we are very proud of. Although we do not have a brother fraternity, we do have strong relationships and have co-sponsored many events and community services with many greek lettered organizations.

HOW DO I SEEK MEMBERSHIP IN OMEGA PHI BETA SORORITY, INCORPORATED?

Each semester there are two information sessions, known as informationals, where questions are answered and more information is given. We also encourage you to attend various events and educational programs hosted by the Sisters of Omega Phi Beta in order to familiarize yourself with the organization and its members.

It is also important to understand that Omega Phi Beta is a non-recruiting organization which means that the Sisters will not approach you to join the sorority. This is done so you have the chance to explore the other organizations on campus and so that you can do things at your own will. If you would like more information email Theta@OmegaPhiBeta.org.

DO YOU HAVE TO BE LATINA TO PURSUE MEMBERSHIP IN OMEGA PHI BETA SORORITY, INCORPORATED?

NO! As an organization we stress and embrace diversity (which is also stated in our motto). Our 17 founders are of various backgrounds including Jamaican, Irish, Puerto Rican, and Chinese (just to name a few). Our diversity is also reflected through the members across the country that are of diverse backgrounds. We are Latina-oriented and not Latina-based which means that when our organization was founded there were efforts made to help and bring an awareness on issues within the Latino community.

Our membership comprises of women from various ancestries throughout the world including: Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as parts in Africa, Europe and Asia. Our diversity is not only limited to our ethnicity but also to the various characteristics and talents that we bring as individuals that come together as a unit to make Omega Phi Beta a successful, prosperous and advancing organization.
